ZELP Sense is a low-cost, easy-to-use system for continuously measuring methane and carbon dioxide emissions from individual cows in real-world settings, together with estimated DMI.

1. Fit

  • Easy to fit to animal – no specialist infrastructure or labour required
  • Typical fitting time: 5-10 minutes2
  • Cows typically resume normal behaviours shortly after fitting3

2. Measure

  • Gas is sampled from close to the cow’s nostrils
  • Onboard sensors track emissions-related data

3. Track

  • Data offloads automatically when connected to WiFi and is quickly processed by ZELP’s proprietary algorithms
  • Users receive up to four CH4 and CO2 emission estimates per day (g/day), plus daily dry matter intake (DMI) estimates (kg/day)1

4. Report

  • Insights are given for cow, group and herd
  • Results can be easily downloaded (.csv) for further analysis and shared with partners

Hear from our users

“The ZELP Sense devices were easy to put on cow. The headpieces are a soft and breathable material that fits comfortably on the animal. I like that I can use a small number of devices across my herd and rotate them in line with my day-to-day routine.”

Ben Mycock
Dairy Farmer, Derbyshire, UK
Holstein Friesian, TMR/Pasture
“Fitting the devices is remarkably easy. There is a brief habituation period of around two minutes, but after that the cows are not bothered by them.”

Ben George,
Cattle Farmer, Veterinary Surgeon and Consultant for ZELP

“After running a trial with prototype devices, we believe ZELP Sense’s potential for in-field grazing application is an exciting prospect. The fitting process was straightforward, and I was impressed by the flexible nosepiece that allowed cattle to drink and eat normally.”

ZELP Sense provides CH₄ , CO₂ and DMI estimates. Evaluation trials for CH₄ and CO₂ estimates are available here. DMI estimates are currently in beta and users will be updated once this feature is fully released.
2
Actual fitting time depends on user experience and animal disposition.

During development and field testing, cattle behaviour was monitored by animal scientists and veterinarians. Observations from these trials showed cattle returning to normal behaviours shortly after device fitting.
