We have developed a technology to oxidize the methane present in cattle exhalations, as up to 95% of methane emissions come from the mouth and nostrils of the animal. Zelp technology measures, captures and oxidizes methane in real-time, with the capacity to target vast quantities of methane.
The cattle wearable attaches to regular halters in a non-intrusive way and, as well as converting methane, it has the added capacity to improve animal welfare by capturing, analyzing and processing large amounts of data on each animal.
The novel aspect of this technology lies in the process we have developed for oxidizing the highly diluted methane exhaled by cattle. This process incorporates novel catalytic technology that has been successfully tested in laboratories with proven catalytic efficiency under conditions that replicate those on the cow. This technology has also been tested through numerous behavioural trials which evaluate the impact of the wearable on animal behavior as well as production yields, rumination, rest and activity periods and feed intake.

You will not need special assistance to install the wearable. All you need to do is fit the halter on the animal in the same way that you would do with a normal halter or collar. The installation takes seconds and the animals adapt within 5 minutes.
We recommend to use it on cattle from 6-8 months onwards, or following weaning, from which time the animal is going to be able to reap the highest benefits of the device. It is adjustable and can fit onto different head sizes in order to make every animal comfortable. Installing and adjusting the halter is as easy as using a zip-tie.
It is designed to work uninterruptedly for around five years, without needing to be charged. The wearable is packed with a solar cell and a thermo-electric generator to allow the wearable to re-charge automatically.
At Zelp we are aiming to recycle the majority of components and parts in each device. The collection of used wearables is a task that will be managed by the company. This is to ensure the correct processes are in place for responsible management of any of the materials which cannot be re-used.

Most worldwide experts believe that global warming represents the largest threat facing humanity. Evidence suggests that the agricultural sector is responsible for 22% of total global emissions. Methane gas exhaled by 1.6 billion cattle is the most significant source of greenhouse gases within the sector, amounting to almost 10% of total anthropogenic emissions. The large amounts of methane gas originate from the bovine digestive system which due to methane’s capacity to retain heat in the atmosphere is significantly more damaging to our environment than carbon dioxide emissions.
Livestock methane emissions contribute more to global warming than all of the cars in the world combined and, according to the UN, the consumption of beef and dairy products is set to almost double by 2050.

Scientists and governments have repeatedly called for consumers to cut back on red meat consumption for environmental reasons. This is certainly a very impactful solution. Realistically, however, beef and dairy consumption is expected to rise by 70% in the next 30 years (Food and Agriculture Organization, UN), as some societies access animal protein for the first time, solutions at a worldwide scale need to be deployed as quickly as possible.
For alternative proteins, such as plant-based or cultured, a massive change in consumer behaviour is needed, and barriers of adoption remain high. We understand that global warming above two degrees Celsius can occur before these alternatives become widely adopted and replace animal protein in scale and reach.
We see Zelp as a strong complement to the development of alternative proteins. Ensuring Climate Action is implemented in time, to meet humanity’s climate change goals, is a priority that requires multiple collaborative efforts. While some solutions in this field come from feed additives, they chemically inhibit methane production in the stomach of the animal and alter its digestive process. Zelp technology targets methane once it has been exhaled which allows the animal to digest normally as it does not interfere with the micro-biology in the animals’ stomach. Also the ZELP wearable has a higher methane reduction potential and it can be implemented in grazing cattle (not possible to manage feed on freegrazing animals).

Behavioural trials conducted with leading academic institutions in the UK and Argentina have demonstrated no change in animal behaviour, no impact on animal feeding, yields or rumination patterns – one of the most sensitive indicators of stress by the animal.
Zelp experts are currently working to replicate the trials across breeds and geographies and continue to develop their real-time exhalation monitoring to signal oestrus, disease, and heat-stress. On top of reducing operational costs for farmers, these features prompt the early treatment of these events – resulting in an improvement of animal welfare. The ability of Zelp to monitor animals for health in addition to methane conversion places farmers and their animals at the forefront of the technology.
